Relieving Stress and Anxiety: A Physician’s Perspective

As a physician specializing in medical marijuana, I often see patients who suffer from stress and anxiety. Anxiety can become debilitating, and it is important to discuss effective ways to manage it.

I’ve helped thousands of patients who were suffering with anxiety over my 2 decades of practice. In this blog, I’ll share some of the best ways to handle stress and anxiety.

Exercise: Regular physical activity can help reduce stress and anxiety. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood-boosters that can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety. The optimal way to decrease anxiety and exercise is to get outside and be in nature.

Breathing Exercises: Taking deep, slow breaths can help relax the body and reduce anxiety. Try inhaling deeply through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth. When we begin to practice tuning into the breath, and breathing out slowly, we activate the parasympathetic “rest and restore” response. This is a powerful way to turn down anxiety.

Meditation: Studies show that mindfulness and meditation are a great way to reduce stress and anxiety. We can learn to focus on the present moment. When we build  and observing thoughts and emotions without judgment, you can learn to manage your stress more effectively.

Cannabis-Based Approach:

CBD: Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis that has been shown to have anti-anxiety properties. CBD can be taken in several forms, including oil, capsules, and gummies.

THC: Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the compound in cannabis that produces a "high." While THC can increase anxiety in some people, others find that it helps reduce anxiety and promotes relaxation.

Cannabis Strains: Some cannabis strains are known for their calming and relaxing effects. For example, I most often recommend certain Indica strains for my patients who suffer from anxiety.

I help my patients choose between edibles, tinctures or even vaping. We even discuss micro dosing as a great way to manage anxiety without feeling overwhelmed or intoxicated. .

What I’ve learned over the years of treating my patients is that this is not a “one size fits all” model.  What works for one person may not work for another. If you are struggling with stress and anxiety, consider booking an appointment with me. I partner with each of my patients to help determine the best course for each patient.

I’m Dr. Erich Schramm, and I help my patients move beyond stress and anxiety and live a happier, healthier life.
